The largest and most comprehensive book  to be written on the Virginian Railway is 233 pages, hardback, 8-1/2" by 11" and written by award winning author Aubrey Wiley. With over 400 color and classic black & white pictures, the book tells the story of a most modern, colorful and interesting railroad. It includes  well written personal stories by people who worked on the old Virginian, had family who worked on the railroad or lived nearby. A good deal of local history is covered for dozens of cities, towns and communities served by the Virginian from Norfolk, Virginia, across south side Virginia, through the Piedmont, into the mountain foothills and deep in the coalfields of West Virginia.  Maps, data and plans are in abundance to support the revelations found in this book. Equipment roosters are included for locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars and M or W equipment. Pages of freight train consists in the 1940's and 1950's are from actual freight conductor logs, aka "wheel reports."  References lists with pictures identify freight shippers and coal mines along the railroad.

This is the perfect book to be read to children or for older children to read about the famous steam engine of the old Norfolk & Western railroad, engine number Six Eleven. It makes for good reading to toddlers and when a child starts reading,  it will continue to be appropriate for several years. Teens and adults love the book as well.

The pages of this book are made of  24 point, glossy, heavy card stock, perfect for little fingers. The book measures 8-1/2" by 5-1/2" and is about 1/2" thick. On thirty two pages, over fifty actual photographs (almost all in color)  are used instead of unrealistic artist's illustrations and it is made to lay flat when opened. Follow a girl and boy as Grandpa tells them about the engine that refuses to quit.

When this book came out in 1985, it was only the second book published on the Virginian Railway.  (The first book had come out over twenty years prior.)  The Virginian Handbook is soft cover and eighty pages.

The Southern Handbook has been considered an essential book for Southern Railway fans and historians. Readers will find in this book, pictures and drawings of the wide range of locomotives, freight and passenger cars and structures owned by Southern.
